TRIBAND LAN Messenger Privacy Policy
Privacy policy
TRIBAND LAN Messenger has no server, no account and no cloud. It never connects to the internet, and TRIBAND never receives any of your data — we have nowhere to receive it. Your messages, files and calls travel directly between computers on your own local network, and your history is stored only on your own computer.
There is no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no third party of any kind.
01Who this applies to
This policy covers the Windows application TRIBAND LAN Messenger, published by TRIBAND. It does not cover any other product or website.
02What the application handles
The application handles the following information. Everything in the “Sent to” column goes directly to another computer on your local network, and nowhere else.
| Information | Sent to | Stored |
|---|---|---|
| Display name, status message, profile picture | Broadcast on your local network so others can find you | On your computer |
| Computer name and local IP address | Broadcast on your local network | On your computer |
| A random identifier for your installation | Broadcast on your local network | On your computer |
| Messages, reactions and polls | The recipient’s computer, directly | On both computers |
| Files and folders you send | The recipient’s computer, directly | On both computers |
| Call audio and a shared screen | The other participant, directly | Not recorded or stored |
| Optional start-up PIN | Never sent anywhere | As a salted, repeatedly hashed value — never the PIN itself |
The identifier in row three is a random value generated on your computer when you first run the application. It is not derived from you, your hardware or your Windows account.
03Where it is stored on your computer
- Conversation history, contacts and settings —
%APPDATA%\LanMessenger\<profile>\lanmessenger.db - Received files —
Documents\LAN Messenger\Downloads, or wherever you choose in Settings - Diagnostic logs —
%APPDATA%\LanMessenger\<profile>\logs - The certificate identifying this installation to its peers —
identity.pfx, in the same folder
Message contents are never written to the logs. The logs record connection events, errors and transfer outcomes so a network problem can be diagnosed.
What the application never does
Not “we choose not to” — there is no code in the product that could.
- Connect to the internet
- Contact TRIBAND or any other company
- Create or require an account
- Collect telemetry or usage analytics
- Send crash or error reports
- Show advertising
- Use trackers or third-party services
- Sell, share or transfer your data
04Network use
The application listens and sends only on your local network, using UDP port 45820 for
discovery — including the multicast group 239.255.90.20
— and TCP ports 45821, 45822 and 45825 for messages, file transfers and calls. The
ports are configurable in Settings.
Windows Firewall access is requested for private and domain networks only. The application has no reason to accept connections on a public network and does not ask to.
One exception is worth naming plainly: if you click a web link inside a message, Windows opens it in your browser, and your browser then connects to the internet as it normally would. That is your browser doing so, not this application.
The same is true of Send feedback and Report a bug. They
open a form on triband.in in your browser, with the application and Windows version
numbers filled in. Those numbers are passed after the # in the
address, which browsers never send to a website, so nothing reaches TRIBAND unless you
press Send. If you do, what you typed in the form — your message, the two version
numbers, and a name and email address only if you chose to give them — is delivered
to TRIBAND through the Web3Forms form service. Your conversations, files and contacts are
never part of it.
05Device permissions
- Microphone — used only while you are in a call you placed or answered. Audio is streamed to the other participant and is never recorded.
- Screen capture — used only while you are actively sharing your screen, and stops when you stop sharing or the call ends.
- Files and folders — read only when you choose something to send, and written only where received files are saved.
06Who can see your information
Other people running the application on the same local network can see your display name, computer name, status message, profile picture and whether you are online. That is how the application finds people, and it is the same information any of them shares with you.
Messages, files and calls go only to the person or group you send them to. Traffic between computers is encrypted with TLS 1.2 or 1.3 and the peer’s certificate is pinned, so another machine on the network cannot read it. File transfers are verified with SHA-256 at both ends.
As with any application on a managed network, an administrator may be able to observe that network traffic exists between two computers, even though its contents are encrypted.
07Keeping and deleting your information
Because nothing leaves your computer, deleting it is entirely in your hands. You can delete individual messages, clear a whole conversation, set a retention window after which history is discarded automatically, or turn off history altogether in Settings.
When the application is uninstalled: the Microsoft Store version removes its stored data
with it, while the standalone installer leaves
%APPDATA%\LanMessenger in place so a reinstall keeps your
history. You can delete that folder yourself at any time.
08Children
The application is not directed at children, and it does not knowingly collect information from anyone. As there is no server and no account, TRIBAND holds no information about any user, of any age.
09Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the revised version will be published on this page with a new date at the top. Because the application collects nothing, we do not expect substantive changes unless the product itself gains a capability it does not have today.
